Bulls back in the spotlight at Hereford Spring Show & Sale

Bulls sell to a top of 8,200GNS with a Record Average for Bulls at Hereford Livestock Market conducted by the Society’s Official Auctioneers, Brightwells.

The Junior and Grand Male Champion 18-month-old Solpoll 1 Pogba (right) from J & W McMordie, Ballygowan, Northern Ireland was sold for 6,500gns into the Stratfield Saye Herd from Reading, Berkshire. This bull has excellent performance figures being in the top 1% for all weights, is out of Christies 1 Amber Keno and by Panmure 1 Henry.

Reserve Junior & Reserve Grand Male Champion was Romany 1 Prince BL P41 from JRB Wilson and Sons, Romany Herefords, with the help of Tom Bradley-Farmer. Prince had travelled from Kelso, sold for 6600gns to G Hall, Pinmoor Herefords, Lancashire. 

 



Joint top price of the day of 8200gns went to JRB Wilson’s Romany 1 Poseidon BL P5 (left). Another bull with impressive figures he is a son of Barwise 1 Lancer out of Romany 1 Lily D1 K27 and was purchased by D Manduell, Seascale, Cumbria. Poseidon is in the top 5% of the breed for both eye muscle area and intramuscular fat levels.

Also selling for 8200gns was TD & WT Livesey’s Normanton 1 Perky (below right), who was purchased by former Society Chairman RP Mann of Spinney Herefords, Ufton, Warwickshire. Perky has exemplary figures and is out of Normanton 1 Fistulina and by Australian bull Days Calibre G74 and is in the top 2% for both Terminal and Self Replacing Indices.




The Society's Reserve Bull of the Year 2017, Rempstone 1 Even Money E429 (below left) sold for 7000gns to M Shaw, Kirkby Moorside, York. This Bull was Supreme Champion at a number of Shows over the 2017 season and sits well in the top 10% of the breed for growth rates, Eye Muscle Area and Retail Meat Yield.

J & W McMordie also sold Solpoll 1 Pirate for 5600gns, another son of Panmure 1 Henry, out of Solpoll 1 Stella J11, another Bull with excellent figures being in the top 5% for 200 and 400-day weights, Eye Muscle area, Retail Meat Yield, Self-replacing and Terminal Indices. This bull was sold to HA Hatt, Weybrook Herefords, Sherborne St John, Basingstoke.



Speirs Farms Ltd’s Pepperstock 1 Norman sold to DP Jones, Maxstoke Herefords, Coleshill, Warwickshire for 5400gns, capturing the attention of number of bidders around the ring.

26 Bulls sold for £112,350 to Average £4,321.15

In the Show Heifer section, the Grand Female Champion, 13 month old Moorside 1 Poppy from G & MC Shepherd sold for 3000gns to newcomer to the breed M Jordan of Chathill, Northumberland. Standing Reserve Female Champion was Fisher 1 Clover (below right) purchased by Twose Farms Ltd, Whitland, Carmarthenshire selling for a top female price of the day of 3500gns. Clover was one of a consignment of heifers from Sussex breeders WJ Hutchings and Sons, with 2 other heifers selling to MJ and RD Russell of Chew Magna, North Somerset for 2300gns each.

14 females sold for £36435.00 to Average £2602.50

There was 94% clearance in the For Sale only female section which saw a top price of 2600gns for Mrs JA Pudge’s Heifer Black Hall 1 Shara sold to Leverington Herefords, of Sleaford, Lincolnshire. Well grown females sold consistently demonstrating continued demand for females in the breed.

New Hereford Cattle Society Chairman Robin Irvine commenting after the sale that he was more delighted with a new record average for Bulls with a clearance rate of 72% which was also demonstrated a rise in demand from the previous years sale. Robin would also like to thank Sponsors, Dunbia, Meadow Quality & Nordic Star Tags for their continued support. Auctioneer Gregg Christopher of Brightwells said that trade for bulls was brisk with keen bidding on the best animals, and a strong demand from both commercial and pedigree breeders.
